Location

Rudyard Lake

The hidden gem of the Staffordshire Moorlands

Lying in a fold in thickly wooded hillsides, Rudyard Lake is a haven of peace and tranquility less than a mile from the A523 that links Leek to Macclesfield.

The two and a half mile long lake was created more than two centuries ago to supply water for the then expanding canal system of the West Midlands.

Today it is a popular day out, offering walking, boating, sailing and
fishing for visitors from a wide area, from the Manchester conurbation in the north to the Potteries in the south.

Something for everyone, 120 acres of water for a start, a bit of space for anyone. Rudyard Lake is two and half miles long and half a mile wide, set in area of natural beauty, off a small private single  road.

The lake is 3 miles from Leek, 15  miles from Buxton, 40 miles from Manchester., 1  hour from Chester, 15  miles from Alton Towers - a great day out so loads to do for all ages. Monkey park close by at Trentham gardens, Cheddleton steam railway, Blue John mines and lead mines in Matlock and Derbyshire, lots more to do.  Go Ape , Rope park Buxton, Matlock bath is a great trip out ,cable cars to the lead mines, or walk, run, or cycle around the lake, the cafe is at the dam end along with the Rudyard Hotel, you can paddle to the pub and back but don't go over board!!

Rudyard lake voted in the  top  10 most  romantic places in England. Rudyard Kipling was named after this lake "Take your fun you will find it lives here "

BBC Top gear film location, Triumph herald ,VW camper barge, and a toyota pick up.      Hamster sunk, Jeremy flipped, James won sailing in the triumph!

Angling: Rudyard was once the northern mecca for match angling and even today many angling clubs fish regular matches at the lake. Day ticket angling is available and the ranger comes to you to collect the daily fee of £4 for adults and £3 for juveniles/OAP's. Please note that NRA rod licences are required. The lake is open all year round.

Boat Launching: Many people bring their boats for a day's sailing on Rudyard Lake, launching from the slipway at the damhead. There is a small launch fee per boat, size dependent

Canoeing: Day tickets are available per canoe. There are also group discounts.

Boat hire: Rowing boats (ex Regents Park Lake in London) can be hired mainly during the summer months at a cost of £5 an hour. They carry up to four people and buoyancy aids are available.

Trip boat: The trip boat 'Honey' is available from Easter to the end of October, mainly at weekends, although private bookings are available at other times. The boat is owned and operated by trained volunteers of the League of Friends. It can carry up to 12 passengers. Cruises are usually combined with an informative narration about the lake's history and wildlife. The cost is £3 for adults and £2 for children.
