Lochend Accommodation

"A" Frame Chalets

The "A" Frame Chalets are about 15 meters back from the shore and are 10 meters apart. They enjoy stunning views across the lake and are very popular. The double patio doors lead out to a patio with a large wooden picnic table where there are heather and flowerbeds.

The Chalets are 4**** and so have all sorts of electrical goodies! In the kitchens, they have full sized electric cookers, with oven and grill, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine/tumble dryer, microwave, toaster, kettle, cafetiere, stainless steel pots and pans, Kenwood mixer, all the utensils, crockery and cutlery that you will need. In the living area there is a TV and Video, a CD/Radio/Cassette, and your own Residential line payphone.

The bathrooms all have a Jacuzzi bath with a power shower over. The bedrooms upstairs differ in each chalet - "Osprey", with its spiral staircase, has a single room and a double room, "Heron" has 2 double rooms, and "Cormorant" has a double and a twin; they all have a twin room downstairs.

The Chalets have gas central heating and an electric water heater; all other power is by electricity. We take meter readings on both, when you arrive and again when you leave, you pay for what you use at cost. On weekly lets, the 1st £5 of electricity is included. From the first Saturday in June to the first Saturday in September, the gas central heating is included in the price.

Location

The award winning, self-catering chalets and cabins, which offer a high standard of accommodation, are located in the heart of Scotland, on the southern shores of the beautiful Lake of Menteith, which is part of "Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park". From your window you look across to the Menteith hills and Ben Lomond beyond. Sit in comfort in the lowlands, and drink in the spectacle of the highlands.

Steeped in history, this is a fascinating location to visit. Rob Roy and William Wallace both romped around this area and, touched not only by rouges but by royalty! The infant Mary, Queen of Scots, was hidden on the biggest island on the lake, Inchamaholme.

There is wildlife abound, as it is an area of preserved natural beauty, there are many birds of prey to spot. Mallard ducks have made a happy home here and provide us with much entertainment! But there is also fishing, mountain bikes, rowing, tennis, a games room and an outdoor play area if more entertainment is required!

Aberfoyle and Callander are our nearest villages and Stirling, with its castle, is a 25-minute drive away. Glasgow and Edinburgh are both an hour's drive away.

Lochend is a quiet rural estate, run by the same family for 45 years. Over 50% of customers return and many come to love it, almost as much as the owners do!

Walking

There are so many hills and mountains in the Trossachs you will be spoilt for choice. Details of a range of walks are available on your arrival at Lochend.

Example Walks:
Inversnaid, Loch Lomond

On this fairly easy walk you do a bit of the West Highland Way, pass Rob Roy's Cave (often slippery) and follow the circle of the Inversnaid Nature Reserve which is cared for by the RSPB and at the side of the Hotel there are lovely waterfalls - so a bit of something for everyone on this walk.

Ben A'an

Height is 1520ft. And is highly recommended as you get lots of view for not too much effort. The steepest step nearing the rocky top, is about 3ft. On the well trodden path but you can also do a varying degree of rock climbs on the south face.

Callander Crags
This interesting and old walkway takes you up over the village of Callander and leads to the very spectacular Bracklin falls. There are various routes to choose from but most will take you through some fine woodland. There are some exposed drops near the top and having taken our small children, its probably a better walk for the over 7's!

Places to Visit

Inchmaholme Priory
The ruins of Inchmahome Priory, an Augustine priory founded in 1238 by Walter Comyn, lies on Inchmahome island. The priory has been visited by famous historical figures, such a Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots, and has inspired writers and poets alike over the ages. Much of the building survives today, the small island providing a beautiful and scenic backdrop to explore - this island makes a wonderful day out and a perfect spot for a picnic. The island can be visited by a boat which runs regularly from April to September, based near Port of Menteith.

Stirling Castle
Without doubt one of the grandest of all Scottish castles, both in its situation on a commanding rock outcrop and in its architecture. The Great Hall and the Gatehouse of James IV, the marvellous Palace of James V, the Chapel Royal of James VI and the artillery fortifications of the 16th to 18th centuries are all of outstanding interest.

Culcruech Castle & Country Park
Magnificent 1600 acre parkland estate in breathtaking scenery. 700 year old Culcreuch is a unique opportunity to sample the historic atmosphere of Central Scotland's oldest inhabited castle.

Queen Elizabeth Forest Park
Queen Elizabeth Forest Park was first designated as a Forest Park by the Forestry Commission in 1953 to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. From the east shore of Loch Lomond to the rugged terrain of Strathyre the Forest Park encompasses mountain and moorland, forest and woodland, rivers and lochs. It is home to a rich variety of animal and plant life. For many of our visitors the attraction of the park lies in the peace and quiet, the magnificent views and the wide range of activities and facilities.

SS Sir Walter Scott
The Steamship Sir Walter Scott has been sailing sedately on Loch Katrine since 1900. Cruises start from Trossachs Pier and the trip takes passengers as far as Stronachlachar before returning to the departure point. The boat is aptly named as it was Loch Katrine that inspired the author Sir Walter Scott to write the Lady of the lake.
