Barge Cottage from the canal

Barge Cottage

Barge Cottage is situated in an enviable spot fronting the Kennet & Avon canal at Bathampton. Only 2 miles east of the Centre of the World Heritage City of Bath, it is an ideal base from which to explore Bath, the Cotswolds and surrounding area.

This one bedroom, late Georgian former canal-workers cottage is a perfect retreat for couples wishing to relax and rejuvenate. There is gas central heating throughout, the cost of which is included in the tariff, as is electricity, bedding (bed made-up) and towels/tea towels, basic cleaning materials, plus a small amount of tea, coffee and laundry products to get you started.

The cottage has a strict ‘No Smoking’ policy, and is available throughout the year (minimum stay 2 nights). Sorry no pets.

There is no vehicular access to the cottage but free car parking is available in the village car park adjacent to the George pub (approx 150 yd's).

Barge cottage was built in 1835 and has many character features associated with a property of this age - some of the walls and floors slope, the ceilings and doorways are slightly low in places, and the stairs a little steep. Whilst the property has been recently re-decorated throughout these original features have been retained, as not only is the property Grade 2 listed, they are what makes the cottage so special.

Local Amenities

The George pub is approx 50 yards away and serves good food and drinks throughout the day (although can be busy at weekends and in the summer months).

A Post Office/village-store/newsagents, hairdressers, chemist and doctors surgery are situated in the village centre approximately a 10 minute walk away.

Location

Things to Do

Barge Cottage is in a perfect location for those who enjoy walking. Historic Bath with its wealth of architecture including the Roman Baths and the world-famous Royal Crescent, numerous museums, galleries and excellent shopping, is a delightful 45 minute (approx) stroll along the towpath.

In the other direction lies Limpley Stoke and the famous Dundas Aqueduct (approx 40 min walk). Here you can take a trip on a narrow boat (end March to end October), hire a boat, canoe or bicycle from "The Canal Centre" or enjoy a snack in the Angel Fish Café.

A further 40 min's will take you to the historic woollen town of Bradford on Avon and its splendid Tythe Barn.

Exploring further afield couldn’t be easier, Bathampton is set betwixt the A4 and the A36, giving easy access to the American Museum the only museum of Americana outside of the USA, or Longleat House with its wealth of art.

Only 15 minutes drive away is the National Trust owned village of Lacock which dates back to the 13th-century, and is famous for its part in films such as Pride & Prejudice and Harry Potter.

The chocolate-box Cotswold villages of Biddestone, & Castle Combe (Dr Doolittle) are within easy reach, as is Corsham Court—home of the country’s largest privately owned art collection. The National Trust Properties of Dyrham Park, Prior Park, Great Chalfield Manor, The Courts Gardens and Stourhead are all within 30 minutes drive or less.

A selection of books relating to local history, walks and places of interest are provided for your use. The owners are only a short drive away and are available should any problems arise during your stay.

So whether you are looking for rest and relaxation or to explore the delights of Bath and its surroundings, Barge Cottage is the ideal base from which to do so.
